http://www.deutschlandradiokultur.de/behinderten-aktivistin-sigrid-arnade-gegen-die-uebliche.990.de.html?dram:article_id=373024
guttmensch wannabehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02105600600234724201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3220128262391788242.post-27696871041403356642016-10-20T23:44:38.821+02:002016-10-20T23:44:38.821+02:00Although investigators haven't reached conclus...Although investigators haven't reached conclusions, Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio branded the shooting "unacceptable" and said the situation didn't appear to merit the use of deadly force, while sergeants' union president Ed Mullins described the shooting as self-defense.

It wasn't Danner's first interaction with police, who had safely taken her to hospitals during previous psychiatric episodes, de Blasio said.

Still, memories of lethal encounters between police and people in psychological crisis weighed on her. Her essay alludes to the case of Eleanor Bumpurs, a Bronx woman killed in 1984 after waving a knife at officers during an eviction.

Danner saw the story as a stark example of insufficient police training. And, perhaps, it held a thread of personal connection: Both women were 66, were black and had histories of mental illness.

For Danner, that illness was an ever-lurking force of self-doubt, depression, isolation and flashbacks to bad moments, she wrote in her essay, first reported by The New York Times.guttmensch wannabehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02105600600234724201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3220128262391788242.post-56571510849195442062016-10-20T23:43:04.887+02:002016-10-20T23:43:04.887+02:00NEW YORK (AP) — In a searing, eloquent essay on li...NEW YORK (AP) — In a searing, eloquent essay on living with schizophrenia, Deborah Danner agonized over the deaths of mentally ill people like her at the hands of police.

Less than five years later, she became part of that toll. A police sergeant, called because Danner was in distress, fatally shot her Tuesday in her Bronx apartment after she went at him with a baseball bat, police said.

With the mayor saying the sergeant failed to follow his training in handling mentally ill people, Danner's death seems to echo a scenario she dreaded in a 2012 essay.

"We are all aware of the all too frequent news stories about the mentally ill who come up against law enforcement instead of mental health professionals and end up dead," she wrote.

http://start.lenovo.com/news/read/category/News/article/the_associated_press-woman_wrote_about_police_killings_before_officer_k-ap
guttmensch wannabehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02105600600234724201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3220128262391788242.post-40233979801455685922016-10-10T05:48:42.249+02:002016-10-10T05:48:42.249+02:00Special-needs boy set on fire by bullies he though...Special-needs boy set on fire by bullies he thought were friends
By Alexandra Klausner
October 6, 2016

A 10-year-old special-needs boy was on life support after bullies allegedly lured him to a field, doused him with gasoline and lit him on fire on Sunday.
Kayden Culp of Kerrville, Texas, has burns over 20 percent of his body from his ears to his belly button, and his organs are failing, according to a YouCaring page set up by the boy’s family to cover his health care expenses.
As of Thursday afternoon, Kayden’s family had raised over six times their $10,000 goal.
One unidentified child has been charged with arson following the incident and is “responsible for causing the victim’s severe burns,” according to a statement from the local fire marshal.
He is one of three boys — ages 9, 10 and 11 — who were taken into custody in the grisly attack, reported Fox.
One alleged attacker “had issues being destructive and disruptive,” Kayden’s aunt Tanya Kasper told the station.
“His mom even made the comment that she wasn’t able to handle him,” Kasper added.
The heartbroken family believes the victim — who exhibits autistic tendencies and has trouble speaking and hearing — was intentionally targeted.
“The other kids are saying that he was going to be riding his bike like he always is, my nephew Kayden is going to be riding his bike, and they said we’re going to grab him and take him inside and burn him,” Kayden’s aunt Kelly Mack told News4 San Antonio.
“If it wasn’t premeditated, it still is attempted murder,” Mack added.
The boy’s mother, Tristyn Hatchett, 29, says she thinks her boy’s alleged assailants should be “incarcerated” and charged with murder.
“He considered these guys his friends, but they would make fun of him and pick on him and tease him,” Hatchett told the Houston Chronicle.
“He was usually the brunt of that kind of joke, but he kept playing with them,” she added.

In response, Keller penned a popular letter (the 1933 equivalent of a viral blog post) letting the students know exactly how she felt.
